The Thorn Institute
How much does the Monroe Institute cost? An Australian guide
By Daniel Spina, Monroe Institute Outreach Trainer, Melbourne
People ask me this a lot, so here's a straight answer, written for people in Australia.
The short answer
The Monroe Institute's best-known program is Gateway Voyage, a five-day, six-night residential program. Most of the time it runs at the Institute's campus in Faber, Virginia, in the United States, and sometimes at other venues in the US, Europe and Japan.
As of October 2026, Gateway Voyage starts at US$2,695, and some dates and locations cost up to US$4,995. At the exchange rate when I wrote this, US$2,695 is roughly A$3,900.
That's the program fee. From Australia you also need flights to the US, which are often A$2,000 or more return, plus travel insurance and getting from the airport to the campus. So for most Australians, doing Gateway Voyage in Virginia ends up somewhere around A$6,000 to A$8,000 all up.
Prices usually go up a little each year, and the exchange rate moves around, so check the current price on the Monroe Institute website before you plan anything.
The cheaper ways to start from Australia
You don't have to fly to Virginia to start. There are two ways in from here.
1. Exploring Consciousness, in person in Melbourne
Exploring Consciousness is the Monroe Institute's official two-day workshop, taught by certified Outreach Trainers like me. It's built on the first two days of Gateway Voyage. Over the weekend you learn Focus 10 (mind awake, body asleep) and Focus 12 (expanded awareness), lying on an airbed with headphones on while guided Monroe audio takes you through the exercises. No meditation experience needed.
I run it in Melbourne. You go home each night, so there's no travel or accommodation to pay for. Some dates are residential retreats in the country, with accommodation and meals included.
There's also a bonus if you go further later. Exploring Consciousness graduates get US$200 off a Monroe Institute residential program, like Gateway Voyage, or US$100 off a virtual program.
2. Gateway Voyage Online, at home
Gateway Voyage Online is the Monroe Institute's self-paced version of Gateway Voyage. It's 23 guided sessions, about 26 hours of training, done at your own pace over 8 to 12 weeks, with video introductions from trainers and an online community. You need stereo headphones and a quiet space.
As of October 2026 it's US$595, roughly A$860. Through The Thorn Institute you get 10% off with the code GVO-THORN-INSTITUTE.
Which one should you do?
Exploring Consciousness suits you if you want to try the Monroe method in person, in a small group, with someone in the room to ask questions, without committing to a week overseas.
Gateway Voyage Online suits you if you'd rather go at your own pace at home, or you're not near Melbourne.
Gateway Voyage in Virginia suits you if you already know this is for you and you want the full five-day residential experience, including the later Focus levels.
A lot of people do them in that order. They start with a weekend or the online course, and if it clicks, they go to Virginia later. If you start with Exploring Consciousness, your graduate discount then comes off the next program you do.
Questions people ask
Can I do Monroe Institute programs in Australia?
Yes. Exploring Consciousness is run in Australia by certified Monroe Outreach Trainers. I run it in Melbourne. Gateway Voyage Online can be done from anywhere.
Is Gateway Voyage Online the same as going to Virginia?
It covers the same journey through the Focus levels, but at home and at your own pace. You miss the residential experience: the group, the trainers in the room, and the dedicated sound booths you sleep and do the exercises in.
Is Exploring Consciousness a cut-down Gateway Voyage?
It's built from the first two days of Gateway Voyage, so it covers Focus 10 and Focus 12. Gateway Voyage goes further, to Focus 15 and Focus 21.
Is there a discount if I do Exploring Consciousness first?
Yes. Exploring Consciousness graduates get US$200 off a Monroe Institute residential program, such as Gateway Voyage, or US$100 off a virtual program.
Why is it so expensive in Virginia?
The price covers six nights' accommodation, all meals, the trainers, and the purpose-built facilities. For Australians the bigger cost is usually the flights.
Prices checked October 2026 on the Monroe Institute website. Australian dollar amounts are approximate.
